What kind of first dance?

Pick the one that sounds like you. Not sure? Send us your song and we’ll suggest one.

  1. Slow and romantic

Holding each other, a few simple steps, a turn and a dip at the end, if you want one. Quiet, close and easy to remember.

Good if neither of you has danced before.

  2. Choreographed to your song

A routine built for you, count by count, to the song you walk out to. It looks rehearsed because it is.

Good if you want the room to watch.

  3. The surprise switch

It starts slow, then the music cuts to something upbeat and you both break into a routine. We edit the music for you.

Good if you want your guests on their feet.

  4. With your bridal party

Bridesmaids, groomsmen or family join in for part of it. They learn alongside you in the same lessons.

    Each extra dancer is +$30/hr.

What you’ll learn

The things that make a first dance look easy, taught from zero.

  • How to hold each otherWhere your hands go and how to stand, so you look relaxed in the photos rather than stiff.
  • Leading and followingOne of you guides, the other follows, so nobody is counting out loud on the day.
  • Turns and a dipOnly what you’re both comfortable with. If something doesn’t feel right, it comes out.
  • Dancing in the dressThe train, the heels, where to hold the skirt. You practise it in the gown before the day.
  • Your entrance and your endingHow to walk on, and the last pose that the photographer is waiting for.
  • Staying on the musicThe cues in your song, so you know where you are. We can cut the song shorter if it’s long.

How it comes together

From the first lesson to the day itself.

  1. Your first lesson

Bring your song and your date. We see what you’ve danced before and try the basics, so the plan fits you.

  2. Your choreography

Built over the next lessons to your music, your personalities and what you’re comfortable with. Film each lesson on the studio’s phone tripod and practise at home.

  3. Music editing

If you want it: your song cut to length, or mixed with a second song for the surprise switch.

  4. Dress rehearsal

You dance it in the gown and the shoes you’ll wear, so nothing surprises you on the day.

  5. A last run-through

A wedding-day practice or a last-minute confidence session, close to the date.

Questions couples ask

We’ve never danced. Can we still do this?

Yes. The lessons start from zero, and the dance is built around what you can do comfortably, not the other way round.

How many lessons will we need?

It depends on the dance you pick and how much you’ve danced before. Tell us your date and your song, and we’ll suggest a plan after the first lesson. Packages of 4, 10 and 20 hours are 20% off during the first two weeks of each month.

When should we start?

As early as you can. Send us your wedding date and we’ll plan the lessons back from it, with the dress rehearsal close to the day.

Can we use our own song?

Yes, any song. We can cut it to length, or mix it with a second song if you want the surprise switch.

Can I practise in my wedding dress?

Yes, that’s the dress rehearsal: you dance it in the gown and the shoes you’ll wear on the day.

Can our bridal party or parents join?

Yes. Each extra dancer is +$30/hr with a junior teacher, or +$100/hr with a senior teacher.

Can just one of us come?

Yes. A lesson for one is $180/hr with a junior teacher, and a new student’s first hour is $120.

What’s the difference between a junior and a senior teacher?

It goes by style. A teacher is priced at the senior rate for the styles they’ve mastered, and at the junior rate for the others. When we match you with a teacher, we tell you which rate applies.

Where are the lessons?
